JBU Student Newspaper Named “Newspaper of the Year”

The Threefold Advocate, John Brown University’s student newspaper, was once again named the ‘Newspaper of the Year’ during the Arkansas College Media Association 2012 Media Contest held on April 20 in Little Rock.

 

“Behind each award is hours of interviewing, writing, editing and designing,” said editor-in-chief Russell Hixson, a senior journalism major. “On behalf of all the staff I would like to thank the JBU community that reads, responds and contributes to the Threefold.”

Sugar Creek Astronomical Society to Host “Astronomy Day” at Hobbs State Park

The members of Sugar Creek Astronomical Society and the Northwest Arkansas Stargazers National will be hosting Astronomy Day 2012 at Hobbs State Park – Conservation Area on Saturday, April 28.  The event is designed for children and adults alike.

According to Sugar Creek Club president, Jack McDaniel, “We want to share our passion for amateur astronomy with everyone that is interested or curious.  We will have day and night programs tailored for everyone: kids, adults, families.

World Vision announced the winners of the Disaster Shelter Design Competition hosted this weekend on the campus of John Brown University. Teams from JBU, Judson University and University of Louisiana-Monroe placed first, second and third, respectively.

Orchestra Brings Story of Russian Hero to Life

The Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) presents an evening of powerful Russian music featuring the University of Arkansas’ Master Chorale and Schola Cantorum under the direction of Todd Prickett.  The story of a legend and the essence of a Russian culture will be portrayed through music on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 7:30 PM at the Arend Arts Center.

Students To Learn About Fishing

Reserve your spot for “Fishing is Fun” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 12, at Loch Lomond’s Granton Park in Bella Vista.

Participating third and fourth graders will fish on a pontoon boat and learn about rod and reel casting, fishing basics and lake ecology, as presented by the Property Owners Association’s Lake Ecologist and Fisheries Manager Darrell Bowman.

The free program, sponsored by Bella Vista Lutheran Church, is limited to the first 45 students. Each student must be accompanied by an adult. A free lunch will be provided.

State Sees Increase in Tick-Related Illnesses

Arkansas is seeing a marked increase of reports of tick-related illnesses, according to the state department of health.

School of Rock Holds Grand Opening Tour

A new school in Rogers held its grand opening tour this weekend but, there’s no history books or math books, it’s for kids to jam out.

The first school of rock in the state of Arkansas is now open in Rogers. The schools mission is to inspire kids to rock on stage and in life. The open house this weekend allowed families to tour the facility and try out the equipment.

The school will feature weekly lessons and group rehearsals with their peers while their students gear up for live shows every four months.
